Pine groves on the dunes

Introduction

Three different types of pine grove are found in the Montgrí Massif: naturally occurring Aleppo pine groves, which are mainly found on the maritime face of the Muntanya Gran; the old pine groves which cover the inland dunes (mainly Aleppo pine and stone pine), planted at the start of the twentieth century to stabilise the dunes; and newer replanted pine groves, started around 25 years ago.

The fauna living in these woods is rich and varied despite being relatively close to built-up areas. Mammals resident in these woods include weasels, beech marten, foxes, wild boar, badgers and squirrels.
